Today, although the original substance is often lost, we incorporate old world customs into our weddings because they are traditional and ritualistic.

Old world marriage customs continue to thrive today, in diluted, disguised and often upgraded forms. Customs we memorialize today were once "brand new" ideas. Although historical accuracy is hard to achieve, the historical weight attached to old world wedding customs and traditions is immense. The Wine/Champagne Toast and Wedding Speech

Throughout the ages, wine has been used for celebration. Often and among many people, wine has signified life, vitality, love, and a life of plenty. Traditional Order of Wedding Toasts

In recent years, the toast to the bride as been replaced by a toast to both the bride and groom.

Once the toast to the bride is complete, the groom rises to respond. The groom’s response will include words to the bride, which are often an affirmation of the first toast. The groom then thanks the best man (or whoever proposed the first toast) and also thanks the parents attending the wedding, both his and the bride’s. The groom’s response closes with a toast to the bridesmaids. After the groom finishes speaking, the best man responds. The traditional response of the best man is to thank the groom on the bridesmaids’ behalf. The best man’s response can be followed by the toasts of others, including ushers or close friends. The traditional order of wedding toasts is closed out by the father of the bride. His job is to thank all of the wedding guests on behalf of him and his wife. He then announces the commencement of wedding festivities. If no the father is not present than the Mother of the Bride can choose to do a Mother of the bride wedding speech. This can be closed with an optional Bridesmaid Wedding speech, but it is up to the wedding style and the amount of time given for the wedding speeches and toasts.

Of course, tomorrow’s traditions are defined by those who break the traditions of today. Non-traditional wedding toasts have been more popular in recent years. The new non-traditional order tends to give the impression of greater equality among the wedding’s participants.

Non-traditional orders may start out with a toast to the couple by a master of ceremonies. This can be followed by a response from the groom that includes thanks to the MC and the wedding guests, then a toast to the bride. A non-traditional set of wedding toasts may continue with words from the bride that include thanks to the groom and a toast to her parents. This toast can also embrace the groom’s parents as well. At this point, several different things could happen, which is the beauty of non-traditional weddings. The father of the bride may propose a toast, or the master of ceremonies may introduce others who want to toast the happy couple. At some point, the toasts will end and celebration will begin.

Dealing with Nervousness

Shaky Knees

If your knees are shaky then it is a good idea to lean onto a table, but by all means don’t sit down: that is not a good way to hold a speech. By standing, all, or at least most of the visitors, will see you. By standing you show the newlyweds your respect.

Shaky Hands

If your hands are shaky then you can stop them from shaking by keeping them behind your back, holding onto something, or just leave your index card on the table where you can see it.

Be Forthright

If you are really nervous, then it is always a good idea to tell it to the guests. You could for example say, “I am sorry for my shaky voice, but this is not exactly my dream come true to stand up here in front of you all so please bear with me.”

Since most people have the same fear of public speaking, 99% of them will understand you really well. Plus, when you’re at a wedding the odds are that you know most of the people, so don’t you worry. This is your day and your wedding speech!
